Mother - 2018
Skirts fans are raving over the release of the second full-length studio album titled "Mother", which contains 10 original songs by Elexa, Sarah, Melissa and Rachel with two songs given to us by Mike Helvey and Brandon Allai. We've included as a prayer one bonus song, the Cherokee Water Song.
Love & Light - Melissa Tastove Sitting up in my room thinking about the world. What am I supposed to do with all these problems? I am just one person and I can't do this alone/sometimes I feel so confused and don't know where to run. I need all my people beside me. So we gotta stand up. So we gotta stand together, joining hand in hand around each other. Keep your head up and don't lose hope. Guided by our love and light, we won't give up. Blacksnake - Elexa Dawson Mama they said it's a felony to stand up for the water that we drink. So, i put my body in the way of the machine that was digging up those graves. Well, they dug up the place where my grandmama lays, now they wanna put me in jail. All these uneven ways keep my people as slaves. Let me say, your black snake will fail. Well, the old ones say there are two different ways, go with the gold or go with the green. It's gonna take a change in our ways and all our prayers for the water to be clean. Oh, the water. Never Know - Elexa Dawson Take time to be around you, out from inside, some time to be without your worry and pride. Give till your pocket's empty. Take in the light. All that we'll ever need is yours as well as mine. You never know who you might love. You never know who might love you. Fire in a cloud of darkness. What will you see? Choosing to know the beauty, change what will be. Solid foundations cannot be washed away. Waves of the storm will bring a healing rain. Wind - Elexa Dawson Times are changing. My head spins. I don't know where you end and I begin. I don't know what changed, I don't know what remains, but I think you do. Do you? Do you know who this is? Seems to me to be so obvious that between you and me is so wide and so deep, you can't even see me, can you? Seasons and years, passions and fears, dry spell and rain, pleasure and pain... The road lays out before me. You know I'm gonna go. I'm never gonna be the girl you used to know. If I can't find my way back, I don't know what I'll do. But, if the wind blows in Kansas, I'll still be loving you. Times have changed, and here I stand. Still no telling just where I'll land. All I know my friend, is that love don't end or go away, but I couldn't stay. Do you know who I am? Seems to me that you don't understand that between you and me is so wide and so deep, you can't even hear me can you? Undone - Elexa Dawson Why don't you love me? She cries out with a scream. It's just a dream, but it was her heart all this time strung together with a thin thread of line. Now she's undone. It's all your doin'. I think I'm done, it's all your doin'. Can't you see it's all your fault? This is my biggest loss. Is this a dream? But you know, nothing seemed so real as when you showed me you could feel. Was that a dream? Now I think I'm done. It's all your doin'. Yeah, she's undone. It's all your doin'. But, I don't give up so easily. And I think I'm done. It's all my doin'. Yeah, she's undone, it's all her doin'. Willow Tree - Elexa Dawson Well, the Flint Hills of Kansas is where I choose to call my home, but dang if the red dirt has not stained me to my bones. And goodness will find me underneath that willow tree, knowing what's done is done, is nothing for me today. So many minutes past, so many hours of my life, each breath I take a gift, the hope of glory bye and bye. And peace surely finds me underneath that willow tree knowing what's done is done is nothing for me today. Strong City - Brandon and Rachel Allai I come from Strong City where the mighty river falls. Ain't it a pity, mama says, when the rain begins to fall? The river will rise soon, will the wildflowers bloom? When was the last time you saw the moon in Strong City? I come from Strong City where the prairie meets the sky. Isn't it pretty when the clouds begin to cry? I'm leaving Strong City. No use in lookin' back. It's hard to see the beauty when the train's run out of track. I come from Strong City where the mighty river falls. Such a pretty memory, rolling hills, coyote calls. Flood of '51 - Sarah Bays coming soon Mother - Elexa Dawson You and I, we are the same. I'm the place from whence you came. Gave you bones, I gave you blood. Turned your face toward the sun. Stay with me a little while. Sow your seeds, drink deep. You'll remember who you are. You and I we are the same. Dust to dust, from whence you came. Everything returns to one. Turn your face toward the sun. Stay with me. Moonflower- Mike Helvey Moonflower's bloomin', perfume's in the air. Mother, protect us, your children so fair. Teach us and guide us just where the path leads. Bless us with plenty of flowers and seeds. Moonflower, moonflower, send us a dream. Show us a picture of how it should be. The hour approaches, we are known by our deeds. Bless us with plenty of flowers and seeds. Moonflower sent me on quite an adventure. We soared over mountain and valley and sea. Returning I sat at the feet of the Mother. She blessed us with plenty of flowers and seeds. There's a way of living that isn't a burden. It's really quite easy, just take what you need and leave all the rest for the rest of creation, and bless them with plenty of flowers and seeds. Down by the River - Elexa Dawson Well, we been livin' high on the hog since the tax check came and went. We don't know 'bout savin' no money but we damn sure get it spent. We got just enough for a 12 pack and a couple more gallons of fuel, and if I can't spend no money tonight, I'm still gonna spend it with you. Let's go down by the river tonight. Look at the stars above and make sweet love, it's goin' down by the river tonight. Well, you came here to go fishin' and I came here to get saved. I'm gonna stick my toes in a river that flows and rolls all my sins away. We'll have ourselves communion with sandwiches and homemade wine, and I might not make it to church tomorrow but tonight I feel divine. People - Elexa Dawson
If you wanna be a free-flowin' channel of love, then you can be a free-flowin' channel of love!
But you can't stop the wind and decide where it should blow, no
No, you can't stop the love and decide where it should go.
If you wanna be a real happy people of love, then you can be a real happy people of love!
Ten Years - Elexa Dawson
One hundred twenty-one degrees and the dust banked on the door. Jack rabbits and there's centipedes but there isn't any corn.
No work, no wheat, no milk and no meat. I'll lose my life in the dust and heat.
Ten years of spittin' mud. My tears are far too dry to run.
I kneel beside my bed tonight with a prayer upon my tongue. Lord, if this cup should pass from me but thine own will be done.
No work, no wheat, no milk and no meat. Preserve my life in the dust and heat.
We tilled and tilled and tilled the ground, but the rain did not follow the plow...
All Along - Elexa Dawson
The Kansas wind speaks to me again.... I've been here all along.
Fields of indigo I will always know...
The mountains tall in me so small...
The geese do fly, in dreams do I...
Many Moons - Elexa Dawson
Many moons ago, I lived in the snow. I sat with this fire and gave thanks.
From the East comes the sun, from the infinite one. I sit with this fire and give thanks.
I look to the West. I seek for the best with every tongue and race. The colors of your face, we sit with this fire and give thanks.
Fall Apart - Elexa Dawson
Blue lights and frost bites through my skin. Tonight this bottle is my only friend. But it won't satisfy the burn. It won't teach me things still left to learn, but when...
You say fall apart then I'm gonna fall apart for you.
So many things that I can't say. So many times I've had to walk away. Can't even write it in a song 'cause you'll be right and baby, I'll be wrong...
The sun has faded with this fight. No more quarrels, just lay with me tonight. You are my anchor in the storm. I need you here with me to keep my body warm...
Blackbird - Elexa Dawson
Black bird with a wounded wing, she gotta find her way back home. See the bird with a wounded wing, she gotta find her way back home.
She walk a crimson path, stolen from blue skies. She ain't never looking back though the fire within her dies...
See the bird with a wounded wing... The bad wolf see the wounded wing...
Let You Go - Elexa Dawson
It ain't over 'till I say, until I let you walk away. But boy I'm stronger than you know, strong enough to let you go.
Cause I ain't waistin' no more time. What we got left ain't worth a dime. Our forever plans, I watched you crush with your bare hands.
It's the same sad song, lord knows I'm tired of feelin' wrong. And if there is a compromise, I just can't see it in your eyes.
I hit this bottle every day, but that don't make it go away. Head and heart they feel the pain and every morning it's the same.
Ghost - Elexa Dawson
He is sitting drinking coffee trying to feel so self-assured that he did not have to ponder the inner haunts that drove him far from her, those inner rooms and places, mistakes tucked safely into corners. Oh, don't look to close, herein lies the ghost.
'Cause there are moments when he has had enough of living in his own skin and that woman touched him in the places he could not bear to begin to live in comfort, had to seal off all those corners. Oh, don't look too close, herein lies the ghost.
Chilocco - Elexa Dawson
Oklahoma territory, a wagon train from Blackwell come. One more stop before the Kansas border line where we will live four years like orphan sons.
There's more they say that they must teach us. We've many new ways of life to learn. Nani mina Os cannot lead us, chemokman's living they must earn.
Rock walls and wooden floors in Chilocco will not contain the wildness in my spirit in my soul. No rest ntowema tonight. Awake the vision of prairie lights.
So, I will tend tomorrow's gardens and I will feed tomorrow's stock. But, the ways and the stories of my yesterday, I once knew well but I forgot.
Six Feet - Elexa Dawson
Here I sit, broken hearted. My man has a lover on the side. And I know I'll come to forgive him, but that little girl must die.
Did you see the way she dresses? I can tell she's been around. Let's see if she learns her lesson when she's six feet in the ground.
He takes her out to the road house and they get pretty drunk every time. And I don't think that they'd pay much attention if I snuck out and cut his brake line.
Well, you might think that I'm over-reacting. You might think that I've lost my head. Oh, but if it's your man she's after, you gonna want that little girl dead.
